Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh officially inaugurated the long‑awaited Shillong Medical College on March 3, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare and medical education journey During a session in the state legislature, she announced that all essential groundwork—affiliation with NEHU, conversion of the Pasteur Hills into an academic block, and reinforcement of infrastructure and faculty recruitment rules—has been completed, and the institution is now pending inspection by the National Medical Commission (NMC) to commence its first MBBS batch in the 2025‑26 academic year. The inauguration is expected to help address chronic doctor shortages in Meghalaya, bringing high-quality medical training and healthcare services closer to home for students and patients alike.

The inauguration of Shillong Medical College is a major step forward in strengthening Meghalaya’s healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to medical education in the region. With the college set to offer MBBS courses under North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), it will open new avenues for aspiring medical students from the state who previously had limited local options. The institution is also expected to serve as a hub for improved medical services, research, and clinical training, reducing dependency on healthcare facilities outside the state. This development aligns with the government’s long-term vision to enhance public health systems and build a self-sustaining network of skilled healthcare professionals within Meghalaya.
